Не легко добывать пресную воду морским птицам. Буревестники и альбатросы живут в открытом океане, далеко от берегов. На суше они появляются раз в год, только чтобы вывести птенцов. Бакланы, кайры, многие чайки, хотя и живут в прибрежной зоне, никогда не пьют пресной воды. Раньше думали, что они довольствуются тканевой жидкостью своих жертв. А оказывается, они охотно пьют морскую воду и многие даже не могут без нее обходиться. В зоологических садах уже давно замечали, что эти птицы в неволе не живут. Зоологи удивлялись: нежные, крошечные колибри переносят неволю; попугаи, страусы, орлы и совы хорошо живут в клетках, а чайки быстро гибнут. Решили, что в тесных клетках морские красавицы скучают по океанским просторам. Но не тоска по морю, не тесные клетки оказались причиной гибели птиц. Просто птицам не хватало солей. Когда пищу им начинали подсаливать, чайки веселели и превосходно жили
